Water Quality Indicator for Adaptability to Global Climate Change in Andean Highland Ecosystems

چکیده

In the face of ongoing anthropogenic climate change, river water quality assessment has become increasingly important for maintaining ecological balance and supporting local downstream livelihoods. This research aims to create a new index (WQI) assess in Andean highlands (>2000 m.a.s.l.) change adaptation mitigation. We examined physicochemical bacteriological parameters benthic macroinvertebrate (BM) community three micro-watersheds Achupallas, Ecuador, achieve our goal. analyzed at 41 sampling points, samples (replicates) were taken nine consecutive months. addition, we evaluated accuracy WQI developed by U.S. National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) 1970 (WQINSF). The BM Andes was used develop calibrate WQI, Biotic Index* (ABI*). calibrated ABI* taxon score area where WQINSF made most accurate measurements. Our results show that sigma value framework quantifies accuracy. Therefore, higher means measured more accurately. There no correlation between Index (ABI). considers presence BMs their sensitivity pollution measure quality. also strong statistical link WQINSF. can aid mountain communities adjusting change. Mountain dwellers monitor stream’s observing communities. However, is not substitute or biological studies.

Response of seafloor ecosystems to abrupt global climate change.

Anthropogenic climate change is predicted to decrease oceanic oxygen (O2) concentrations, with potentially significant effects on marine ecosystems. Geologically recent episodes of abrupt climatic warming provide opportunities to assess the effects of changing oxygenation on marine communities. Thus far, this knowledge has been largely restricted to investigations using Foraminifera, with littl...

On the Vulnerability of Water Limited Ecosystems to Climate Change

Society is facing growing environmental problems that require new research efforts to understand the way ecosystems operate and survive, and their mutual relationships with the hydrologic cycle. In this respect, ecohydrology suggests a renewed interdisciplinary approach that aims to provide a better comprehension of the effects of climatic changes on terrestrial ecosystems. With this aim, a cou...

Modeling of Andean Páramo Ecosystems’ Hydrological Response to Environmental Change

In the Peruvian Andes, water infiltration from tropical wetlands, called páramo, generates headwaters for downstream rivers. The hydrological processes of these wetlands are not well understood within the larger hydrological system, impeding efforts to mitigate the rapid environmental changes anticipated due to regional population growth and climate change. This study constructed and calibrated...

Climate change and global water resources

By 2025, it is estimated that around 5 billion people, out of a total population of around 8 billion, will be living in countries experiencing water stress (using more than 20% of their available resources). Climate change has the potential to impose additional pressures in some regions. This paper describes an assessment of the implications of climate change for global hydrological regimes and...
